disillusioned

i guess it makes sense that i haven’t blogged much since maude died. there’s not been much to say or i’ve been feeling really out of sorts. this past quarter of school was really tiresome and i think it’s setting in that i’m becoming an adult with very little to look forward to. a year ago, i was watching phoenix nights and eagerly thinking about driving to hillsborough to see sheff weds lose to hull city. now i’m sitting in berkeley folding clothes and moaning about sheff weds losing to hull city. see, not much progress.

i realise i stopped talking about library stuff here because i mentally shove it to library attack, which hasn’t really done anything. i’m considering making a new blog for football, but only because 3/4 of my readers don’t like/understand the beautiful game. i also want to plan something good to look forward too, in addition to the hi-fives show at the end of the month. nothing lame like graduating. i’m contemplating getting more involved in breast cancer stuff, even though most of it rubs me the wrong way.

to end off the year, i’m going to get ready by laying on the cancer couch and maybe playing rock band with elbert and mimi. tomorrow, roboejoe and i are driving to carmichael to see the family, visit maude’s grave, and remember why i love the 95608. (christmas in illinois inspired me to start penning a response to “straight outta carmichael”- “stuck in bloomingdale”- which is really an ode to the unincorporated part of the county of my youth.

goodbye

eatin!, originally uploaded by kendrak.

last night i was at kalx until about 9:00 for monamie’s goodbye party. (she’s moving to seattle this weekend.) i’ll really miss her, but i can always go and visit.

i came home to find joe keeping vigil over maude, who wasn’t doing too well. she was laying on her side and quickly fading. it was terrible to see her like that, but she seemed pretty peaceful. we talked to my brother, to see if there was anything we could do to ease her, but he said it was more or less a matter of time.

she died early this morning. the last few months were really turbulent for her, and she definitely put up a fight. she was a guinea pig with a great personality and quite tenacious. i know robojoe and i will miss her a lot.

tomorrow we’re going to go to carmichael and bury her under the parsley outside my parents’ kitchen. i think she’d like that.

the first cut is the deepest

so i’m still watching the stupid uk rock and roll hall of fame thing, only now it’s 2006. rod steward was inducted by some mediocre kid named james morrison and morrison played a medley of rod the mod’s hits. they kicked it off with “the first cut is the deepest”, which i don’t remember rod doing. but if he did, he couldn’t have been good as pp arnold. pp arnold’s version is the best version ever and she is amazing. just watch this video!

up close

hawley, originally uploaded by kendrak.

here’s one of the pictures i took at the richard hawley show the other night. i was pretty much in his face for most of the show, which was weird but nice. i don’t think i embarrassed myself too much, though he definitely seemed a little confused by my sheff weds scarf. (not many americans follow mediocre football clubs, i guess.)

i took some other pictures, but i didn’t want to be that girl- the one taking pictures every second and gawking at them. i was that girl who took a set list and a pic, but whatever… i still consider sheffield to be my spiritual homeland and hawley’s its ambassador.

how english can you be?

right now i’m watching the 2005 ceremony for the uk rock and roll hall of fame. yeah, it’s a little sad but i’m done with school and i need to unwind. in this case i mean wax nostalgic about two of the most important bands to me for the history of forever. of course i’m talking about the who and the kinks. i thought it was great when ray davies inducted the who, because seriously- he’s the only person i would personally put on par with pete townshend.

then who inducted the kinks? the only footballer to score a hat trick in the world cup final- geoff hurst. there seems to be something poetic about the quintessential english band being inducted into a farcical hall of fame by a symbol of english pop culture from days of yore. just like britpop and its descendants will strive to be like the kinks of ‘66, the english football team will keep trying to go back to ‘66. (i guess things could possibly be looking up since capello is the new manager.)

party for rudy

last week i went to a party for rudy guiliani. my friend stephen was hosting it and promised vegan food if i’d attend. so i went, in support of stephen and in search of free food. the only person who showed up that wasn’t one of stephen’s friends was a writer for the huffington post. i think she helped keep the conversation lively. here’s her take on the event.

I’d been trying to find Republicans in San Francisco for weeks. Finally, someone named Stephen signed up online to host a house party for Rudy Giuliani. When I arrived, a twentysomething-year-old guy in skinny jeans and a shaggy haircut opened the door. I thought I was in the wrong place until I noticed his top: a slim, red t-shirt with a picture of Ronald Reagan.

“Love him or hate him, he’s an icon,” shrugged Stephen. As it turned out, he was the only Reagan-lover at his party.

grammaticality

robojoe and i have a rockband called grammaticality. why grammaticality? because it was in the list of word beginning with “g”.

our band is not that great, but we’re getting better. he’s on the drums and i switch between bass and guitar. most of the songs are sort of stupid, but there are some good ones, like “suffragette city” and “should i stay or should i go”, or “bang a gong” (which we had to pay for, but it was worth it). the weird surprise so far? “electric version” by the new pornographers. i scratched my head and then plugged in to play bass so i could pretend to be john collins for just a second.

i can’t wait till we can download all the songs from who’s next. i will rock that like i used to when i was 15.
