my night with geeks and gadets

i’ve got some downtime before i head back to the conference center to do lord knows what. i think i’m attending a session about gadgets and gaming, but going home and watching law & order sounds pretty appealing. i’ve been up since 5:00am and pretty much on the go all day. the good news is that i finally finished last week’s homework. there were so many times i was tempted to as some of the people around for advice on which database could help me track down the answers for class, but that would be cheating and i don’t want to look like such a library school nerd.

today’s sessions weren’t quite as good as yesterday’s. i did go to a couple geared towards corporate libraries, which made me sort of want to work in one even more. i also sort of want to stay where i am and push through lots of changes that will help people, but it’s hard to really know what the best idea would be right now. it’s all a bit premature since i haven’t graduated school yet.

earlier today i talked with a blogger who was sitting against a wall, charging her laptop, and killing time before the taxonomy session. it was pretty refreshing to talk to somebody who isn’t insane for second life but also isn’t a technophobe.

right now i’m at a coffee shop and half the people here are from the conference. it’s funny because some high school kid asked us what internet librarian was about, and the best we could come up with was a vague “librarians who use the internet”. it’s a diverse bunch of people here. i should really start my library blog so i can discuss it more and pretend to be like the annoyed librarian, but i haven’t gotten off my duff.

i did make a facebook group for work and invited some gradstudents (who were my friends). already people have joined that i didn’t invite, so i consider that one victory from the conference. let’s hope i can keep it interesting. i’m just waiting till people outside of berkeley join. i guess that will be the real victory.

ok, off to go see these gadgets and dream about crackberries. tomorrow, i’m going home!

confessions of a library 2.0 nothing

i’m sitting in “bloggers alley” here at IL2007 (as the cool kids are calling it) and i can’t help but think it should be called “boogers alley” and then i think that i might be too immature to be here. it’s weird. there’s been lots of talk about web 2.0 applications, and alot of it seems like old hat. i wonder if it’s because i’m on the younger side of people here or if it’s because i’m secretly a library nerd. i keep seeing all sorts of library bloggers that i read, but i’m not really into this networking thing/too shy to talk to them. i did make one new contact today, which was nice. we’re friends on facebook now, which makes it official.

ok, time to learn about more 2.0 stuff and try to schmooze.

can i meet more hipster librawr nrdz?

i’m about to go to sleep. i’m in monterey, ready to go to internet librarian in the morning. this is my first professional conference and i’m pretty nervous. will it be boring? will i be library 2.0 enough for the cool kids? will people automatically dismiss me because i have a lip ring, black plastic framed glasses, and wear a hoodie? or will people think i’m one of those hipster library things? who knows!

a party to end all parties

this weekend is going to be hellish. first i have the kalx fundraiser friday night. then i have costume kickball/homework/party time saturday. sunday i have to dj for the kalx fundraiser (9:00-noon PST, call and give me money!) and then drive to monterery for the internet librarian conference. see, i’m a busy kid!

the party? it’s my long awaited victory party. it’s also thundershevitz’s record release party and elbert’s birthday party. that’s a tall order, indeed. if you’re reading this post, you’re invited to the party. hooray for victory! what a way to end breast cancer awareness month? if you’re lucky, i’ll show you my scars.
ass, gas, or grass.
hellen of course did this awesome flier. enjoy!

fergie, fergie shut your mouth.

i know this is old news, but this story has been making me cackle.

A DRUNKEN thug who punched Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in the groin has been jailed for 15 months.

Homeless Kevin Reynolds, 44, branded by the judge a ’significant risk to the public’, staggered up to Sir Alex and hit him.

His `stunned’ victim doubled up in agony and gasped: “What the hell are you doing?”

The beggar – whose criminal record includes 146 convictions, many for violence – said: “I’m sorry Fergie, I didn’t realise it was you.” But then he held out his arms and started shouting: “Fergie, Fergie, shut your mouth.”

so mr. reynolds was just going about, randomly punching men in the nuts? there had to be some reason that fergie stuck out. i do like the idea of reynolds immediately breaking into an antagonistic chant as soon as he realised who he punched. if only the cctv footage was on youtube.

oh well.. i must get back to reading about indexing images and the norman conquest. my next guinea pig (don’t worry, maude’s still alive) will have an anglo-saxon name.

rumbling

this fast thing is sort of crappy. i’m not feeling very good and i wonder if it’s because i’m an idiot or i’m not 100% better from chemo or what. point is… my resolve is wavering and i’m not sure i am going to make it to friday. i’m definitely stopping by saturday so i can make myself ill whilst watching ufc 77. my will power’s cracking and it’s a pretty crummy feeling, but oh well.

of course now everything looks like food and it’s all around. i’m even thinking about eating a proper english fry up, though i also know that would be suicide. five live has been soliciting breakfast pics, and some of them are sort of gross, but this fry up makes me think about giving up this ascetic lifestyle for good. sad, innit?
i mean, look at it!

fry me up!

too fast, too furious

i know the blogging’s been scant, but i’ve been busy on bigger and better things. first of all, i’m djing at kalx again. (sunday mornings, 9:00-noon… tune in!) there’s also cavy watch 2007- where i make maude’s still alive. so far i’m not convinced she’s actually dying because she won’t stop eating, but it’s nothing i’m going to complain about. i also have a bunch of library related stuff in the works. oh, and there will be a thundershevitz record release/elbert’s birthday/my cancer victory party in a few weeks. but really… i’m too weak from this juice fast. i’m hoping to only drink fresh juices and pureed fruits and veggies until at least friday if not sunday. it’s stupid and i’m hungry, but it’s just something to do.

this is the beginning of the end

maude’s dying. the vet pretty much told us this morning. he commented that he’s surprised she lived this long after the teeth problems began. until she finally does kick the bucket (who knows how long it’ll be), i need to keep her dry and as happy as possible. problem is, she hates it when i bathe and dry her. oh well. eat a carrot and think of her.

get back to shake that fat

this morning i kicked off my day by going to the gym for the first time in about a year. the funny thing- i still have my same old locker that had my same old gym clothes in it. i’m not the same old kendra though- i’m 35 pounds heavier, more out of shape, lacking all upper body strength, and menopausal. it’s terrible. of course if i keep going to the gym, i’ll get better… but it’s tedious work and i don’t like all the kids i see there. i should go to bed to get up to spend half and hour on the stair climber (because i’m boring).

western nevada is a big nothing

rainbow, originally uploaded by kendrak.

it’s been a while since robojoe and i explored western nevada. let me tell you, it’s a big pile of nothing. lots of long, lonely roads on the high plains of the desert. i think we even saw a tumbleweed at one point on highway 95. here’s the basic route, not counting a couple of the ghost towns. it’s a lot of driving, innit?

this picture is from candelaria, nv after a little rain storm. let me tell you, that town was dead. here are pictures from the whole trip, or most of it. i didn’t take many pictures in southern california, but we didn’t do much there. i talked to uc irivine, i talked to ucla, i hung out with a librarian in downtown la, and we hung out with ivymike.

vegas was something of a bust, but i did get a ben sherman that really makes me look like a skinhead. i also spent a pretty penny on a fred perry, but i have to look sharp, innit?

oh, and don’t go to tonopah. it’ll make you look like this. there’s really nothing there, other than the ramada inn and giggle springs.
