is sweet baby the best band ever?

that’s a good question. when pressed, i usually say yes (half jokingly). this is usually when robojoe talks about his love for operation ivy or crimpshrine. for most people, sweet baby doesn’t even factor into that equation.

right now there’s a thread at the pop punk bored that asks the most important question: what’s the best denery brothers related band?

pactress erika, from little type, alerted me to the thread earlier but i can’t post because i’m not a member. (quelle suprise!) jesse luscious, fellow north berkeley resident and kalx dj, defended the hi-fives in my honour for coming in behind the bomb bassets. (seriously!) i know how larry will fall in on this debate.

so how would i rank them all?

  1. the hi-fives
  2. sweet baby
  3. all the rest depending on my mood

i know it’s sort of a cop out, but it would be criminal if the hi-fives weren’t number 1. the only reason i first listened to sweet baby was because of the hi-fives. it probably doesn’t hurt that i saw the hi-fives many, many times, and have only seen sweet baby videos. as for the poll results, they make sense. sweet baby and the bomb bassets are more pop punk than the hi-fives. i assume the typical path of discovery to sweet baby is mr t experience -> bomb bassets -> sweet baby, which is very logical. or even just picking things randomly from the lookout catalog, which i used to do a lot. i remember the november show when john denery told me that i had to listen to his brother’s music and give him a report of what i thought. i also remember getting the records for christmas (same year as my pailey hoodie) and locking myself in my room listening to them.

regardless, the hi-fives are stil my number 1. sweet baby may be the best band ever, but the hi-fives will always be my favourite. i’m still upset at myself for not seeing them last month, especially since sheffield wednesday started losing as soon as i saw them. i cursed my team and missed my favourite band.

for some reason i just went to check how many copies of the brent’s tv 7″ i own- 6. 2 green, 1 blue, 1 red, 1 purple, 1 black. see? it’s sort of like how i have all 4 party pooper 7″s by the smugglers. i guess i should take a picture with the sweet baby record when it arrives.

robojoe has his triumvirate- op ivy, crimpshrine, and crass- and i guess i have mine- the hi-fives/sweet baby, the smugglers, and i guess mtx, though not really.

wednesday

it’s wednesday. sheffield wednesday are currently losing to southampton. it’s sad that they can’t even win on their own day of the week!

it’s time for the best bowl of all…

now that i’m older, i’m really starting to get into sport. i still can’t watch a full football game without a little fatigue, but i do know that i’m sick to death of peyton manning. he reminds me of such a “good ol’ boy”, who’s been groomed to look nice enough, repeat sports cliches, and throw a ball. it’s clear that his dad has pretty much molded all of the manning boys (musn’t forget eli or cooper!) into football machines. ugh. he makes me sick.

i guess i shouldn’t blame peyton manning, but more like espn. it’s my fault for watching cold pizza every morning. i should stop now that woody paige is gone. anyhow. i want the bears to win the superbowl. not much of a suprise, but i like lovie smith, and i want to see rex grossman shut people up. oh, and i want to see manning go down.

i’m not sure if i’ll actually watch superbowl XLI live though as it conflicts with the best bowl of all- puppybowl III. i haven’t missed a single one since puppybowl I, so i need to keep the streak alive. now that the tifaux has gone tits up, i’m not sure i can tape it, which means i’ll need to watch it live. it seems like it’s grown a bit since people finally understand the appeal of puppies playing for three hours. i can’t wait to vote for mvp.

making the collector nerd sweat

why am i still thinking about calling in my broker and bidding on this sealed copy of “it’s a girl”? erika wisely told me not to, but i still feel as if i’m letting a part of myself down. i need as many copies of that record as i can get and i don’t have a unopened copy yet. but it’s $73!!! (though i would be willing to bid over $100 for it.)

i need to calm down. i should spend this money on buying a copy of the cd for elbert. (he’s never heard it!) then i should make the sweet baby/brent’s t.v. cover band truly awesome. more awesome than it is now. then we need t-shirts.

now i need more coffee. (and that record.)

eta- my broker, robojoe, won the auction. i now own a sealed copy of “it’s a girl!” if i needed a reminder of how lame i can be, i just got it.

more things for your ears

i’ve been listening to a lot of music again. i guess i’m excited about going to gilman tonight. my whole post the other day was supposed to be a platform to wax about how much i miss the clarendon hills. i really do. so here’s more music for you to listen to:

  • the clarendon hills – “you and i” i engineered this performance they did for KALX. it was the first time i ever hung out with them. that night had magic.
  • the potatomen – “all my yesterdays” this morning when i was walking into work, i was listening to this song. i forgot how much i actually liked the potatomen and how much i wish i was more like rose melberg.
  • white plains – “my baby loves lovin’” this song always gets stuck in my head. it’s pathetic.
  • david bowie – “modern love” because i have bad taste, ultimately.

yep. it’s all true.

does it burn when you pee?

i never really understood the allure of burning man. i remember during our senior year of high school, a friend of mine ditching school for a week to go. i thought it was cool she was doing that, but more because she was ditching school for a week to go to a festival or something alterna, burning man itself seemed sort of self indulgent and boring. what ever.

over the years it’s grown to be huge and bloated, full of drugged out “hippies” play-acting for a week. over the past few years my indifference has grown into contempt, mostly out of proximity to people like my downstairs neighbour who’s a total “burner“. (this is ignoring the fact that i’m paranoid that she’s going to burn down the house someday.) there’s nothing hip or edgy (to me) about (upper)middle class white people people who spend so much money to act arty and hedonistic one week a year, when many seem to be compensating for the guilt associated with privilege and affluence. it’s funny too, because to be able to afford to go to burning man in style, and all the other neo-primitive arty stuff like srl. ahh, you all love the stereo-typical san franciscan, though it’s sad when they’re robbed.
well, i guess the burning man community’s being ripped apart by a lawsuit. to borrow a phrase from the w3b 2.0 burners, “oh noes!” of course it’s a big story on laughing squid. of course i’m something of a hater because i never “got it”, but the whole thing isn’t suprising- except for the level of indignation people seem to feel. you mean spending a week bartering junk and being high isn’t a spiritual experience and people just want money? pshaw.

air guitar world record misses the mark

this past weekend, metal gods saxon teamed up with sheffield wednesday and sunderland fans at hillsborough to attemp to break the world air guitar playing record. like most things involving wednesday, they fell short. but it’s great that they tried.

here’s a pretty funny clip from youtube with saxon front man biff byford talking about their new album and the stunt. maybe if wednesday had won the whole thing would have worked, but alas they dropped to 12th on the table.

do you hear what i hear?

this has been a relatively assy week, and it’s only wednesday! ugh… anyhow, here are some tunes you all should listen to:

  • jeff beck – “hi ho silver lining” if i had to rank moments where songs transcended normal meaning and became something almost spiritual, singing along to this song with 28,600 people, as done before every sheffield wednesday home match.
  • the bats – “shake shake slop slop” this is a song from the bear family compilation die hamburg szene. i remember when i first got this cd and how amazing i thought it was.
  • chris farlowe – “handbags and gladrags” the first time i heard the song, it was by rod stewart. then i heard the stereophonics’ (thanks, neil!) version, which i mistook for rod stewart. chris farlowe blows both of them out of the water. (yes, i know it’s the theme to the office.)
  • taktloss und justus – “wider zeit” these guys are part of the new wave of german rap that doesn’t suck. taktloss is part of the emergent battle rap scene in berlin. it’s so much better than die fantastischen vier.
  • drunken boat – “keeponkeeponkeepon” i found a free copy of this cd at kalx and was shocked. this might be one of my favourite albums of 2006, why would there be a free copy floating around? i took it and will most likely give it to helllllen to post about on her new blllllog. this song is good and you should listen to it, and then go to little type and buy the cd.
  • the style council – “solid bond in your heart” this song is a good song to dance to. i listened to it today when i wanted to scream because a patron was being a complete jerk, i didn’t lose my cool. despite loving the jam, i think most of style council’s material is pretty dull. where they do hit the mark is on stuff like this- straight up soul sounds. not the weird 80s crap they did later.

so yeah, there’s some music for y’all!

dear diary…

when i was in england i made a point to buy michael palin’s diaries 1969-1979: the python years, which you still can’t get in america. i can understand it because the book is huge- a good 5″ thick and densely packed with lots of trivia about monty python, observations about current events, and personal details. it is enjoyable to read, but also a little weird. somethings really don’t change- like war and suffering.

michael palin’s obsessive diary writing has been going on for years. i always thought people who kept diaries did it since they were kids, but palin started in 1969 because he gave up smoking and felt he could stick with diaries. why shouldn’t i try it? that way in 40 years my diaries can be published, offering insights about iraq, reality television, library science, pop music, and sport. i’m sure it could be interesting but most likely it will just be as dull as adrian mole.

girls and guitars

while robojoe and i were away, my friends who looked in on maude brought along the 6 year-old daughter of one of their friends. the little girl is a fan of anything small, furry, and cute. maude fits the bill. the girl saw all the guitars in the front room and commented that robojoe had a lot of guitars and my friends told her they were probably mine. the girl said that’s not possible because girls don’t play guitar.

my friends tried to explain to her that girls do play guitar but the girl didn’t believe them. the only guitar player she knew was her father, which meant boys are guitar players. they’re now trying to figure out how to show her girls rock. i guess the kid likes sleater kinney, so they’re on their way. i mentioned liz phair, joan jett, and chrissie hynde.

it’s odd for me to think about female guitar players, because so many of them are so insufferable. actually, lots of bands with women just bore me. i can’t tell if it’s because the music sucks or their being women in that band makes it suck. bads like tilt make me wonder what the music would sound like if it weren’t lead by a woman vocalist. i think it would be different, and that probably means better. there are exceptions to the rule though- i like x-ray specs, and i don’t think their music sounds like it’s played by women. this is my fist is one of my favourite bands too, and again, i don’t think the music is any different for it being written and sang by a woman. dreamdate’s another group like that. though they try to project such a girly image (and it sells, really), their music lacks that insipid quality i expect from groups that try to sell itself through gender.

i guess i just remember as a kid the cliche of girls in bands playing keyboards and looking hot. then it was bass players (which i’m guilty of). and i guess guitar players. or the primal girl drummer. point is, girls in bands can be used as a gimmick and when it seems gimmicky, it bugs me. oh well…. maybe i’m jealous because i’ll never be the token cute girl in the band.

speaking of bands with girls… one of my new favourite bands what the kids want will be playing gilman this friday with the groovie ghoulies and gravy train. i’m suprised they’re coming and really stoked.

owls, stop losing!

this morning sucked. first, there was a no-show at kalx this morning. i hate getting the phone call. ugh. don’t worry, the station survived. then, sheffield wednesday lost to sunderland 2-4. i can’t say i’m suprised, but it’s still disappointing. the owls haven’t won a game since 2006! they were looking good, but not so much these days. oh well. i shouldn’t moan about or dwell on it, but how am i supposed to learn how to program SQL when my injury-riddled team keeps sucking?

i’m not sure what to make of the liverpool win over chelsea. i guess i’m happy? not for the redshite, but it’s always a little enjoyable to watch a team like chelsea collapse. it reminds me of the yankees in the post-season this past year.

time for homework!

January 19th, 2007

let’s go back to the year 2002…

today i spent my lunch break roaming around the main library at berkeley. i needed to look at the reference collection for an assignment and i figured i could get some books at the same time. walking down the stairs to get to the bottom of the main stacks was weird- it felt like i was regressing. i remember there was a brief time before i fell in with the “love booth” in the nd call number section of the main stacks, i found comfort in the far south-east corner of the bottom level of the stacks- around the z call numbers. it was the end. it made sense that people wouldn’t hang out there, as it was a trek to get there and since the library school dissolved and the information school moved with the times, the z-series about library services became under utilized. it was almost always guaranteed that you could get a desk there. i remember in one of my drunken nights in the stacks during finals trying to build a fort there with the books about bibliographies and cataloguing. yeah… i’ve learned my lesson since.

it really felt like i was an undergrad again, but i totally passed the pn-call numbers, which was a little odd. it wasn’t really till i checked out that i felt like i was back to normal. (yeah, the students working the circ desk at moffitt are still as anti-service as always. it was more important that i girl flick a rubber band at a friend, and another girl needed to run after a boy to tell him to ask troy about a cat, than it was to check out my books.)  i forgot i get to borrow books for a year at a time. the girl at the desk looked confused (when she decided to actually process my transaction), and misstamped the first one. i can read all about dealing with problem patrons and democracy through reference till 2008! hopefully i’ll be a proper librarian by then.

after work, robojoe and i went to the berkeley public library so i could snag a number from a reference item for homework. i hadn’t been to the bpl is quite some time. public libraries always seem somewhat romantic to me, but i don’t think i could handle working at one. of course i was a little lost because they don’t use library of congress call numbers, and i couldn’t find the book i needed because it was behind the reference desk. i asked a librarian if i could see it and he seemed all right. he didn’t care that it was for library school homework. oh well. we got out there just around closing.

this week will never end. i need to go figure out what my database will deliver and then make it work. i also need to do some diagrams, finish my reference homework, do my stats homework, and teach some kalx. clearly, there’s no time for zelda. schade.

now he’s just pandering…

gordon brown is backing england to host and win the 2018 world cup?!?! as i’ve just read a biography about the chancellor, i know how he’s all about being scotts, or at least he was until he decided he wanted to be prime minister of britain. now he’s just trying to be more english so that they will trust him. it’s crap, really. yeah, like he’d be happy about gazza knocking scotland out in 1996. i call foul on that!
