and the nominee is…

samuel a. alito jr.!!!! come on down!!!

natually, bush’s announcement of alito as the next supreme court nominee is big news. the news doesn’t stop for halloween. is alito shocking? at least he was actually a judge, that’s an improvement. is he a good guy? of course not- how can bush actually support somebody who isn’t on the dark side?

alito would be the fifth catholic on the supreme court, which is a little weird if you ask me. why would papists have such sway in the court? because rome keeps them tied to the same dogma that bush wants to govern the world by. scary? nah. am i being stupid? probably.

allright. happy halloween.

“losers gotta eat too…”

joe and i made a pizza in celebration for finding a dj for tonight’s shift. i’m really happy about that. if i had to, i would have gone into kalx for the umpteenth time this week, and as much as i’d like to see the end of the fundraiser… i’d rather spend one night at home (without a migraine). i also got a pumpkin today named “cherie”. she’s a white pumpkin and has a thick skin. just don’t call her fat.

when looking for pizza cooking times, joe stumbled upon a dope blog- cooking for losers. the recipes look tasty, easy, and informal. they are very much kendra recipes. i keep thinking about making a recipe blog, but well, my food is too ad hoc.

check it out.

how do you say….

one thing that always bugs me (yeah, that one thing) is when people pronounce things weird. not super wrong, but you know, the other way. it’s like the different people describe their dad’s sister. is it aunt: [ænt] or [ɑnt]? i say the former. the latter carries so many other things with it, like class .

here’s the wiki of disputed pronunciation. this all started with watching some how to boil water. i made fun of tyler florence as i usually do. this time was for his pronunciation of caramel. i am a [ˈkɔɹ.ml̩] girl, he says [ˈkeɪɹ.ə.ˌmɛl]. sorry, but the second is just too posh for me. i know joe and mike probably think i’m crazy, but well… you’re language says a lot about you.

gordon’s got flava.

i know i shouldn’t be using the sun as a news source, but what ever. i do read it from time to time. like today.

apparently gordon brown is as big of a fan of uk garage as i am. he’s got his eye on lady sov:

Mr Brown – who is likely to be Britain’s Prime Minister when Tony Blair steps down before the next election – is said to have told the MC of his devotion at a recent get together to promote enterprise for young people.

Lady Sov told us: “I only spoke to him quickly, as he’s a busy guy, but he commented on my music and said he’s a fan.

“He said he’s paying attention to what I’m up to, which is weird coming from Gordon Brown.

“He did all the talking – I could hardly get a word out! He’s alright.”

Lady Sovereign also took the chance to talk to the Chancellor about her Save The Hoodie campaign.

hopefully gordon will listen to her about the save the hoodie. as an avid wearer of hoodies, i shudder to think that gordon “love of my life” brown would actually prohibit me from wear one? eek!

free advice no.10

this week has been hell, as you could probably have guessed. today at work has also been sorta bad. i won’t get into that. i will get into this, since aaron asked for it, free advice!!!! for aaron, of course…

this week’s is another dr. miriam:

[DEAR KENDRA],
I’m an American girl studying for a fine art degree in this country. I find British men very attractive. Although I have lots of male friends, there’s no one special yet but I feel it’s only a matter of time. In America the men I’ve had sexual relationships with were all circumcised but I’m told that is unusual here.

Before I left the US I saw an episode of Sex And The City where Charlotte, played by Kristin Davis, was horrified by the idea of having sex with a man who is not circumcised.

Does it make a difference and do other women think it does?

dear you,

i’m so the wrong person to ask about this. why don’t you try somebody who actually has an opinion on penises. (like your mom).

i hope this helps.

[DEAR KENDRA],
I can hardly keep awake at work but can’t sleep when I go to bed. I don’t want to lose my job and I’m desperate for a decent night’s kip so I can start working on all cylinders again. Should I ask my doctor for a sedative?

dear you,

unless you want to be addicted to sedatives, don’t go to your doctor. i’ve found that watching cricket helps. or just get drunk. it’s a cheaper habit. try to relax and go to sleep.

i hope this helps.

[DEAR KENDRA],
My boyfriend and I have been involved in a long-distance relationship for three months. We keep in touch by email, phone and visits when we are able to. We used to live almost next door and had been seeing each other for nearly a year but I’m worried the distance may mean we’ll drift apart. What are our chances of staying together?

dear you,

long distance relationships can suck. if both of you are fine with it, and can deal with it, the relationship can work. if you want to still get laid… well… break up! it’s sad, but oh well…

i hope this helps.

welcome to my neighbourhood…

don’t you love forwards? normally i don’t, but this link has been making the rounds here at work, and i like it enough to blag about it.

schwarzenegger street is not as friendly as seasame street, but it’s still amusing.

i’m not so odd…

rarely do i do these things called “memes” on my blog, but if my new favourite blog the zenformation professional tagged you, which could mean me, who am i to argue?

Write down five (or more) of your own personal idiosyncrasies. Then, if you wish, tag five people from your blogroll or friendslist to do the same.
1. i will not take notes in anything other than black ink. no pencil, no other colour. it bugs me that we only have blue pens at work, but i brought a black pen in from home.
2. i cannot stand, nor will i abide by, the colour combination of navy blue and black. i will not wear black shoes with navy blue pants, nor will i wear navy blue shirts with black pants/hoodies.
3. i loathe the colour purple. i refuse to own anything that’s purple, aside from organic things like fruit or flowers.
4. i won’t wear white tube socks anymore. when i was a freshman in college i vowed to stop wearing them, so i had to buy all new socks. the only white socks i own are shortie socks from multi packs that came with black and black and white socks. i rarely wear them because…
5. i think white socks with dark shoes look funny. i could wear them with my checked vans, but not my new all black pair. white socks and black shoes make me cringe for some reason.
6. i think it’s a sign of a bad day when my underwear clashes with my outfit, which is most days.
7. i want to snap somebody’s thong (like a wedgie) when i see them sticking out of the tops of their pants.
8. i used to use fake names when i was a kid.
9. i do not like eating a sandwich of any sort, such that the contents fall on the plate/floor/ground. i must eat slowly/carefully so that i don’t drop any of it.
10. noisy eaters/people who chew with their mouth open are the easiest way to make me irrationally upset.
11. i still think about getting the first and second germanic sound shift tattooed on my arms.

if you see this, you should do it too.

my big headache.

so you all know this week has been something of a giant headache. i still blame the kalx fundraiser, but i know all the stuff at work is just making it rough.

last night i had to watch the sox win it on the computer. espn, i’d be nothing without you. i was stuck watching over the fundraiser and it gave me a headache that carried over into today. i still have it. why? there were just too many people (drama queens) around the station, and somebody totally messed up the pledge tallies in the middle of the day. i left it in a slight mess, and called to apologize about it this morning, but found out one of the people there (great kid, absolutely no sense) totally messed it up for everybody. gah! the fundraiser is fun, but being the person in charge is a headache.

today i left work early because of the headache. 3 cups of 3 day old coffee didn’t seem to fix it. having intense talks with my boss didn’t help it either. i was told i could leave at 9am. i stayed till 3pm. at least the big stack of crap on my desk is gone, but it was rough. i could tell my brain was slow. i walked home and napped a bit, and then napped a bit more. hopefully tomorrow morning i’ll be good to go.

tomorrow i have to get a bunch of stuff done before we have the goodbye party for one of my student workers. the library will be less exciting without her. it’s odd. with the last of the stundet workers hired before me leaving, i’m much more “the boss” and there’s a little bit less continuity. she best graduate! then is cookie hour, and a goodbye to one of our favourite researchers- he’s moving to sacramento. after that is a fancy party for work at the faculty club. i’ve never gone to a do like that. i’m also due at kalx to be “on air talent” from 9-midnight. it’s going to be weird.

i should go to bed now.

pearls in the astrodrome…

it’s bottom of the 11th, and jenks just hit taveras in the head and berkman (a killer bee) is up.

what does fox keep cutting to? pictures of yuppie ladies and yuppie men looking cold and lost in houston. this must be the poshest crowd for a baseball game outside of san francisco. i’m sorry, but pictures of old ladies with bad dye jobs, “hip” leather jackets from liz claiborne, and face lifts are not baseball to me. that astros fan who kept making rude gestures, holding up the “k” shirt, and looking melodramatic- that’s baseball.

seriously fox, stop showing shots of rich old ladies in the stands. their pain just seems a little contrived. more regular dudes, or at least a kid with a rally cap.

finally. a fat guy in a retro shirt. thanks!

holy cow!

and the other cheek?ok, so i’m watching the world series, waiting for h-dawg to pick me up so we can go get some shirt for some screen printing. hiz-h-dawg is that awesome.

anyhow. they just had a tribue to rosa parks. it was nice. barbara bush was there, even though her family’s had money in the other texas team. and aaron neville sang one of the weirdest versions of “god bless america” i’ve ever heard. it didn’t even sound like he was singing the song, just sorta making odd harmonic noises. i know i was missing the point, but that “singing” combined with the cross tattoo on his cheek- it was too much.

seriously. a cross on his cheek? who does that? aaron neville, obviously. why? (nevermind, i think that’s also obvious… sort of.) but when? he’s must have had it for a while. ok. i won’t ever understand it, i guess.

stupid sox. don’t lose this now! i mean… go white sox!

10 songs pt. 2

here are ten songs from the podjoey:

  • operation cliff clavin- “i’d like to see you”

  • nick lowe- “half a boy & half a man”
  • avail- “connection”
  • big black- “texas”
  • palomar- “static”
  • t. rex- “diamond meadows”
  • sweet baby- “the way she gets around (traction)”
  • the outsiders- “you remind me”
  • helen love- “greatest fan”
  • patsy cline- “faded love”

what does this list say? not much. this week is as “caucasian” as last, but i’m resigned to that fact. it’s also more punk than not, or at least guitar driven. it just makes me happy that big black and sweet baby are on it. you know i like those bands, yeah?

yeah…

set match game!

those of you who spend extended periods of time around me (ie joe), and hear me complain about boing boing (ie joe), might know that i have some irrational bias against cory docotorw. he’s just one of the various things i complain about. why? i don’t know really. i guess it’s because it seems like he’s the biggest offender of third person self promotion on boing boing, and it always sounds sort of awkward. (xeni jardin is a close second.) it’s not that i don’t think that they shouldn’t mention their doings and going ons, that’s what blogs are for, but it just seems that every day it’s another post about cory’s book, cory’s talks, xeni’s regular radio spots, cory’s world traveling, usw. for some reason they just stick out from the normal boing boing posts about neat and “wonderful things”. i’ve been very close to talking about it for a while now, usually just whining to joe, but today i feel compelled to finally blog it.

i always chalked up my dislike for cory to the fact that he’s not my kind of geek. he’s into slick cutting edge tech, the hottest gadgets, and it seems like those geeks who try to be cool (or hot like xeni). there’s nothing wrong with it, but i just don’t get it. i would think as a geeklebrity of the world, cory would have been familiar with the classic game set. apparently, he wasn’t until last week. (he first played it last week on a friend’s houseboat in amsterdam, of course- yes, i wish i were in amsterdam last week playing set, and kicking it with amina.) i just can’t fathom anybody so entrenched in the nerd/geek world not having played it before. i guess it’s because i first played set (and developed the subsequent addiction/obsession) 13 years ago. i used to spend my days playing it alone while watching star trek, a practice i revived this summer.

though i might not like all of his blog posts, he seems like an interesting guy and i credit him for doing lots of stuff. it’s good that cory is now a devotee. if i ever have the please of meeting him, i’d love to play a game. i bet he’d beat me- he strikes me as somebody who could be that good.

pay the ransom to get me out of the basement…

it’s sunday night and i’m not at home watching the white sox win game 2 of the world series. how sad is that?

no, i’m sitting in the basement of barrows hall watching the 2005 kalx fundraiser!!!! yes folk, it’s the fundraiser, which means the bulk of my week will be spent helping the station beg for some dosh. (that’s cash, dudes.) so far it’s been a pretty mellow night, but i know it’ll pick up as the week gets older.

i also started to knit a new scarf.

but mostly i’m sitting around watching people do stuff, making sure they don’t mess up. they haven’t messed up and i haven’t gotten bored. i think it’s because the white sox won.

pledge!!!!

how to kill a zombie

i’m watching a very good documentary called night of the living dead. from it, i’ve learned a very valuable skill- how to kill a zombie.

1. Zombies can be killed by a bullet or sharp blow to the head. “Kill the brain, and you kill the ghoul”. Smash their heads!
2. Fire may also kill a zombie, but it is unclear as to how effective this is.

if only i had a gun. at least my trusty crowbar can help me out. here’s to frying a zombie!
