“the greatest PM for generations”

lord callaghan, “the greatest PM of our generation”, was honoured in a memorial service yesterday in westminster abbey.

the guardian remembered him with this bit:

[He] suffered more political hardship every week in the 70s than Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have suffered in the average year.

they’re right you know.

playing that word game

following the shooting of jean charles de menezes, a brazillian national with an expired visa in london, the press is up to the game of wearing it’s views on its arms with “catchy” headlines. some papers are decribing him as a terror victim, making it seem that his death is just a tragic episode in this crazy-mixed-up war on terror. the police were just doing their job as best as can be expected under current circumstances. it’s not suprising that the cuban press is making him into a martyr.

other agencies are questioning the expired or phoney visa, as if that makes it acceptable. if anything, it just shows how poor of a job britain is doing with legal immigration.

the incident has opened up a new dialogue on the abuse of power by metropolitan police. does the “shoot to kill” policy need revision? since the met cocked it up, what should be done now? perhaps this is just more evidence that racial profiling doesn’t work.

i wish i had the answers.

producers just don’t understand…

i doubt george martin would approve of thee kendrak attack.

He says, “With iPods, mini-recorders and all the new technology, people can lie in their bath and make a rock record.”

sounds like i’ve a challenge for the next ep. i’ll call it “songs from the pink tub….”, and it will be as crappy as “straight outta carmichael”.

totally ganked from dr. frank’s suicide note.

it’s a rough life in the library

today has certainly been rocky and weird. i woke up late, and slipped and banged my elbow hella hard in the shower. then i burnt my tongue on coffee and then my knuckle (forth finger, left hand) on the toaster over- there’s a small blister. then i lost my keys. it took my 45 minutes to find my keys under a pile of crap i haven’t touched in weeks. i blame the kids who came over last night. it wouldn’t have been so bad, but i had to be at a meeting at 8:30 today. i rushed out of the house to get to said meeting, and somehow decided that i didn’t lock my front door. you know the panic that ensued… i called jenn and then texted hellen to check to see it was locked. they both checked (!!!) and i did lock it, though i have no recollection of ever doing it.

the meeting was about safety in all the ucb libraries- essentially students are oblivious and are being ripped off as a result. the only way to combat this theft is to get less stupid students. that will never happen.

then i came back and worked on work stuff. i ripped my finger open with a rusty staple. thankfully, i had a tetanus shot last year. i did bleed on a bunch of books, but oh well. my finger sorta hurts, but that’s the way it goes in the stacks.

self promotion, of the lamest kind.

i finally uploaded the entire “straight outta carmichael” ep to the site. for those of you who haven’t heard them yet (or you just can’t get enough), check out the links to the right. i think i might have some more songs by the end of the week.

prc=pure ridiculous crap

tonight was a prc (programme review committee) meeting at kalx. this one was particularly bad as it was “open to all”- all approved kalx volunteers (students and community members alike) could apply. these are rather rare, and they result in at least on highly contested show. luckily there was only one of those tonight.

the prc is a 10 person panel that votes to determine show awards. it’s very kalx. most college radio stations have a programme director or maybe even a panel of three people. the kalx method is very transparent (you know who votes for whom and meetings are open to the general station), but cumbersome. it’s hard to get people to agree and democraticly award shows. there are some very subjective factors by which we award shows (engineering, station business, format, usw.), but when all of those things are equal we have to use objective critera to pick shows (who’s show sounds better/more put together, or who has the better show in our opinion). that’s where things get messy and is the main reason prc meetings can drag on well past two or three hours.

tonight had one of those awards where we kept talking in circles because nobody wanted to be the bad guy. it was tough- four “good” djs, two of which were really the most qualified, but those two were on different extremes of the spectrum and really came down to taste. by some fluke the show was awarded in one vote, but it wasn’t a satisfying ending. i know the people on the couch couldn’t look everybody in the eye when it was over, but i guess these types of out comes are to be expected. that’s the rough part of being on the prc. (other than the crappy hours.) the other awards were unopposed and pretty simple, but we still had to do them. like all things kalx, it always seems like it’s mostly procedural. i made it home before 10:30 pm, so i can’t complain.

i remember when i first joined the prc how tough it was. i was younger (20 or so), and less confident within the station, though way more obnoxious. i would just sit on the couch with mona and ponnie and be afraid to say anything. now i sit on the couch and talk all the time. i guess it’s progress of some sort.

no more prc for the next two weeks! wheee!

a whole lotta wrong…

this sotry is nothing but wrong.

A 22-year-old man faces criminal charges in Nebraska for having sex with an underage 13-year-old girl, although he legally married her in Kansas after she became pregnant.

The man’s lawyer said the couple, with their families’ support, “made a responsible decision to try to cope with the problem.”

Matthew Koso, 22, was charged Monday with first-degree sexual assault, punishable by up to 50 years in prison. He was released on $7,500 bail pending an Aug. 17 preliminary hearing.

After the girl became pregnant, her mother gave permission in May for Koso to take the young woman to Kansas, which allows minors to get married with parental consent. The girl is now 14 and seven months pregnant.

“The idea … is repugnant to me,” said Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning. “These people made the decision to send their … 14-year-old daughter to Kansas to marry a pedophile.”

not exactly a ringing endorsement…

i guess the jury’s still out on the supreme court nomination of john g. roberts. there’s nothing overtly shocking about him yet. the fact that the kneejerk liberals and conservatives are uneasy about him makes him somewhat appealing- he must be doing something right to be pissing off all the right people. (i guess i should take a lesson from him about that.)

so why does diane feinstein’s caged endorsement of him make me uncomfortable? because she’s willing to roll over and play favor to the administration far too quickly for my taste. i’ve lost a lot of respect for her over the years (around the same time i started to respect barbara boxer), and just because she says “he’s ok,” makes me think, “oh no he’s not!” i recognise this is a kneejerk reaction, but she disgusts me. i can’t wait til she retires.

the problem with being me…

is that i don’t think things through. lord knows i’m great at pissing people off, as evident in posts like this and this, but i don’t know really how to feel about it. true, i should self censor, but what about people just saying, “that kendrak person is just silly and insecure,” and leaving it at that. it’s funny because when people go around passively escalating it, i just sorta cave in. oh well. i’d like to think of this as one of my last great vestiges of immaturity. everbody has them, mine just might be a little toxic and self destructive. i guess this blog isn’t the place for that sort of thing now that people actually read it (as opposed to a year ago).

(at this point i want to welcome everybody who’s stumbled on this blog because i’ve pissed you or your friends off.)

aside from all this self created drama, i dj’d this morning. what started out rough ended up fine. here’s the play list:

“punk rock girls” the queers v/a: then is the new now, A
“femme in a black leather jacket” pansy division 7″
“schools in” the groovie ghoulies go! stories, A
“how many times” beatnick termites
“train kept a rolling” panther burns ft. tav falco 7″
“gospel zone” shadows of knight s/t

that set started out as penance of sorts.

“international style” sister carol 10″
“rock steady” phyllis dillon
“girl in my dreams” david & ruben
“last train” scrabbel 1909 A
“one more day (you’ll fly again)” Eric Carbor and David Kaufman songs from suicide bridge

that set was admittedly weird. who knows why i like raggae all of a sudden.

“the guerriere and the constitution” mick hanly
“windy” rufus harley kings/queens
“windy” the association
“six days in may” the gants
“can you hear me” polanie wrenchin the wires vol.2

this set was a little all over the place, though i hope it worked. the rufus harley song was amazing.

“that one we like” sharp knife s/t
“rub me out” the cravats 7″
“dawn of the dead” death sentence shindig!
“oadarn aufscheiden” die bselinge

the “punk set.”

“wieserschein” die sterne
“the start of something” voxtrot s/t 7″
“pop sonds your boyfriend’s too stupid to know about” tullycraft the singles
“do you remember” tallulah gosh

this was the first of many-a-pop set. it was also time for the kalx ridefinder

“second place” dressy bessy electrified A
“norfolk windmills” northern picture libraries *
“autumn” the bran flakes bounces
“deine allerschnsten dinge” die welttraumforscher 21 weltraum standards

more indie-pop, ending with some beats.

“farewell welfare” rory mcleod
“as the crow flies” rory gallagher
“columbus stockade blues” bill anderson
“union burying song” woody guthrie
“joseph looney” ollie gilbert

this was the folky-country set. yeah, this show is blocky. i’ve been listening to lots of rory gallagher lately, but mostly is rocking stuff. his folk stuff is just as good.

“the beat goes on” sonny and cher R
“the house song” scott walker we had it
“she comes running” lee hazlewood 13 R
“heroes and villains” the beach boys smiley smile R
“generation sex” the divine comedy

note the number of requests! i was a little suprised. turned out to be a pretty lush set.

“love it’s getting better” the groove v/a soulful pop
“mustard” the dittos
“hold me tenderly” owen and leon silvera *
“billy bonds (MBE)” barmy army

this was the groove set, i guess. i was dancing.

“accidents will happen” elvis costello armed forces R
“MENSA girl” the german art students name droppers A
“got to have pop!” moderns v/a: powerpearls v.2
“we love you” psychedelic furs s/t R
“don’t lie to yourself” clearlake wonder if the snow will settle A
“acryclic afternoon” pulp his ‘n’ hers R

another request laden set. lots of brit/indie-pop. it’s clear what kalx listeners like.

“running on spot” the jam the gift

that was my last song, and it made my day.

overall i should have played more feature, but i think the show was a lot better than i was expecting. i anticipated a sloppy kitchen sink ordeal, but it ended up like a decent kalx show. only the tape will tell…

time to shift for more penance.

but yeah, every kid needs to have their heart broken like this. some kids it’s the fact that they’ll never have a pony. for me, i think it was the fact that i’ll never be tall or that i’ll never be famous.
