return of a classic?

should we bring back what love drew? looking back, some of this art is rather inspired. word was somebody wanted to write an art review of it.

and by the way, i still hate sweet cornbread. it’s gross.

party for poverty?

hey all. i’m still trying to figure out what to do regarding heino’s hanging up the brille. it comes at such an unfortunate time. i get my promotion tomorrow and live-8 is on saturday. this should be a happy time, not one of mourning.

anyhow. i’m thinking about having a live-8 party of sorts. all day- me, the tv, live-8, occaisional grilling, lots of illing- it’s going to be great.

if anybody wants to join in, i’d be willing to make donuts. if not, screw you all for ignoring such a culturally important event after the last culturally important event.

schluss

heino is calling it quits after 40 years. after his sunglasses were stolen, he’s calling it a day…
“without my glasses, i am only half a man.”

heino! no!!! what will the world be like without you??!?!?!?!

i’m finally coming to terms with this, i think.

the problems with being old school

this morning was the first day in a long time that i didn’t wear either my vans, my converse, or my flip flops to work. why? i think wearing shoes with no support have caused me to get a pinched nerve of sorts. i’m now wearing my running shoes and my foot doesn’t hurt. weird that. i can’t believe i’m not wearing those shoes, but i guess hobbling around (whilst looking cool) isn’t as good as walking from a to b in a timely fashion. old classic fashion kills man.

i just dropped the circulation card box. see, we’re still on manual circulation at work. i’m sure you’ve heard me bitch about it before. we use circulation cards, filed by call number, to keep track of our charges. i just dropped the box with 90% of our charges. the box broke. the cards are scattered all over the ground. i don’t feel like putting them all back in order. i suppose i could get a student to do it, but it’s not their fault- i’m the clumsy one. the upside is that i get to make sure things are in order, thus correcting the laziness of a few students. yech. i’d much rather be deaccessioning books than this.

the emberassing thing is that i did this in front of another librarian from the igs library. he chuckled, since igs is one of the 3 other libraries on campus (that i know of) to still use manual circulation. all 4 of us are affiliated libraries, and we seem to simultaneously loath and love the system. maybe not love, but we’re proud of it. not only for patron security, but it’s old school. we’re an odd bunch, but we tend to congregate at library functions, bond over our antiquated record keeping systems, and exclude those from libraries who can afford computerised circulation.

meeting mr. right…

Mr Ram

Originally uploaded by jgebis.

now that i’m home alone, and feeling decidedly anti-social (read: anti-crowd), i’ve fallen in with the romantic comedy crowd. i’ve watched so many in the past few weeks that it’s astounding: what women want, the tom hanks/meg ryan double feature of sleepless in seattle and you’ve got mail, the richard gere/horsey roberts reunion runaway bride, and the horrible fools rush in. perhaps me and mr. ram (as seen above) can star in a romatic comedy of our own. when is eyes light up, it melts my heart.

i need to change my tune. at least i’ve been reworking the apartment. my mom came over yesterday and “pimped” out my deck. i am getting into gardening now, since i’m old, and have a renewed hatred towards squirrels. i’ve been cleaning the kitchen today, but i think i’m going to bed now instead of finishing.

the death of manly-men

this article about the rise of “smurf boys”- notably conor oberst and wes anderson- reaffirms why i can’t stand being lumped in with 20-something college educated people: these harmless guys are just irritating, as are the legion of fans.

apparently this is what “my people” want:

In our Age of Terror, educated art consumers and taste arbiters want nothing more than for Mom to make them a grilled cheese with some Swiss Miss Instant Cocoa on the side. The hand-carvings of the sensitive son–sexless, multi-allergic, bubble dwelling–represent a return to comfort, to nonresponsibility, to sleep.

oh, how true it is! i just need to look at my student workers for affirmation as such.

ganked from here.

ps. could somebody please explain the appeal of dave eggers and mcsweeney’s? from what i can glean, neal pollack’s definition for it as old gaelic for “trendy literary scene” seems apt.

pod-royal

the chronicle has an article (today i think) about queen elizabeth’s ipod.

That means QEII is gettin’ jiggy widdit with her new iPod. The British press has reported that Her Majesty commanded a member of her staff to ye olde Apple Store on London’s Regent Street to procure for her personage one silver 6 GB iPod Mini, capable of holding 1,500 songs. And, yes, she got a royal discount.

an ipod mini? come on! she’s the queen of england? why not the 60GB ipod photo? huh?

the article isn’t as good as the one about george bush’s ipod. it’s too speculative and going for obvious jokes;

Now everybody is wondering exactly what tunes are making it onto the 79- year-old monarch’s playlist. The most popular guesses seem to be Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” the Stone Roses’ “Elizabeth My Dear” and, naturally, ABBA’s “Dancing Queen.” Those might seem good choices until you consider the lyrics for the second song: “Tear me apart and boil my bones/ I’ll not rest till she’s lost her throne/ My aim is true my message is clear/ It’s curtains for you, Elizabeth my dear.”
[...]
Assuming Elizabeth enjoys repeatedly hearing her own title in song, she might consider something a little more sophisticated, for example David Bowie’s ode to transvestites and heroin, “Queen Bitch.” Or if she’s having a bad day and needs something to lift her spirits, it’s hard to beat the verses of Queen Latifah’s “Queen of Royal Badness”: “The queen is hyped up, awesome and deadly/ If you don’t dance, grab a chair and plex, B.” But even QEII would find Juice Newton’s 1981 hit “Queen of Hearts” totally lame.

i seriously wonder what she listens to. i bet she’s a cliff richard fan, still.

np- crass: “securicor” going into mtx “what is punk?” (i need to load more stuff on to this thing…)

charmless man

this reports that blur is suing itself:

Blur bassist Alex James has revealed that Blur are suing each other. James expressed his disappointment at the band’s uninvolvement in the live 8 event, following frontman Damon Albarn’s blasting of the ‘Anglo-Saxon’ event.

When asked whether the dispute would mean the end of Blur, James emphatically denied such a course.

Albarn has previously stated that Blur will not work on a new album until former guitarist Graham Coxon re-joins the band.

as much as i hate damon albarn (i bet he’d get an mfa), i respect the fact that he realises blur is shit without graham coxon. as much as coxon’s solo stuff is dissapointing, blur’s stuff without him is even more so.

alex james is cool- he collaborated with sophie ellis-bextor.

mfa’s eat it!

mfa- stands for motherfucking asshole? whatever. if you know me, which most of you do, you probably know i can’t stand people who get mfa’s. i know that’s not nice, and some of my good friends plan on getting one (which is great for them), but a major part of me thinks they’re ridiculous. why do you need to go to university to learn to be creative? i understand that the critiques will help focus a person’s writing, but spending 2+ years to get three letters to append to your name that the publishing world will never fully appreciate seems silly. but then again, i’m not the sort to do something like that. not that i’m not all for creativity, but i prefer it in it’s raw form. hence thee kendrak attack, my sloppy drawings, and my plans for my first big book.

i only say this all cos dr. frank posted about it today. it’s something that’s been a topic of conversation for a while, but as i’ve just started researching my book, and reaquainting myself with why i loathe foucault, it just seems like it bears repeating.

i hate computers

this website is super buggy. if i accidentally deleted your comments, i’m sorry. i’m not trying to censor you, it’s just that weird stuff is happening. i’m looking into finding a new host- one that doesn’t need to reset the mysql every 6 hours.

what really sucks is that i had so many witty ideas today, but now that i’ve taken a nap- i’m dead out. i really wanted to come up with something witty to make up for the crap that dr. frank linked to today. i know anybody can read this, but hundreds of people reading about my post-teenage angst is a little weird. oh well.

i’ve fallen in love with timmy von trimble. is that a bad thing? all day i listen to it and laugh. it’s to the point now, where i start laughing when i hear his voice because i know it’s going to be that funny.

i’m also seriously considering getting satelite radio because sirius is picking up radio1. now the rest of america has a chance to get sucked into the chris moyles show. the bad thing is that they’re going to account for the time difference. i haven’t woken up with moylesey since he did the afternoon show! weird. too bad will kinder left the show again. i also expect this to lead to another american invasion of moylesworld, which is never a good thing.

hopefully this will still be working when i have something good to say.

beat it! hahaha.

you all better start stocking up on drummer jokes*, because i got a drumset! lookout world! i don’t have it yet- i need to wait for the drummer from my band to move to portland- but i’m finally going to be a drummer after 14 years of waiting. hear that? 14 years!!! i can’t wait! then i can play in all my favourite bands that haven’t been started yet, and start losing all my friends whilst i beat out my brain cells.

*drummer jokes courtesy of dr. frank at suicide girls. i’d laugh, if i weren’t too tired.
