titan paver!

look at that titan paver! i’m currently writing an abstract about these mega machines of the paving industry, and you know what? they’re german. but what’s weirder is that they come from one of my favourite german towns, hameln. you know hameln, as in der rattenfänger von hameln, or affectionately known as the pied piper of hamlen. this is totally one of those creepy moments becuase yesterday i played the intro to said fairy tale on the radio and then wrote about it in my liner notes for the upcoming ep. now i’m writing about it in an abstract about pavement! this just means i need to go to hameln asap.
(my tip to hameln in summer of 2004)

jeff ott rules!

this morning i dj’ed on kalx from 6am-9am. i wasn’t really prepared, and most of my sets sorta sucked. i was stumbling, mumbling, and messing up left and right. i wonder, why am i a dj training director when i’m such a bad dj? i did finally turn in a tape to the sublist to move up some slots. i’ve been a dj for nigh on 4 years, and i’ve just gotten around to doing this. i think that means that i’m selling out. but i’m doing it in that back door kind of way like rancid.

i can’t even remember songs i played that i actually liked. i did have my token punk set towards the end which was nice. i should have done it sooner, as it really got me going, but i always end on stuff i actually like. i played a fifteen song, even though i played them last time i dj’ed, which made me happy. what was even better was the guy who called in and just yelled into the phone, “jeff ott rules! that is all.” and then hung up. jeff ott, i can’t help but like his stuff with fifteen and crimpshrine, though i can do without his later stuff. i’m totally not one to those kids who worships him. though i gotta say, those kids are better than the opivy/rancid drones. after that somebody called in to request avail. that’s great, i always like playing them too. then i got a request for screeching weasel when i was playing the eyeliners (they were in feature), which i didn’t play. i’m still not a big screeching weasel fan, despite the fact that on paper it looks like i would be. as i was ending my 1990s block of lookout-style punk, somebody requested mtx (i was playing tilt at the time). for a second i was going to play something off of love is dead, but didn’t. my set was long and i had to end. my next set was country music, which i slid a dr. frank solo song into- it fit well with ernest tubb- which pissed the caller off! the mtx request guy called back!
“this isn’t the mr t experience.” he said.
“i know.” i said.
“does this mean you’re not going to play it then?” he asked.
“not within the next 15 minutes, no. this is as much dr. frank as you’re going to get.” i answered.
“that’s lame.” he said.
“call back after 9 and request it again if you’re so desperate.” i said. then i hung up. i wonder who that guy was. i feel slightly bad, but not so bad. i feel bad about playing people’s request up to the point that they get obnoxious. listeners need to realise that i have other things to do than make them (individually happy). don’t expect requests to get played in the last 10 minutes of a show. and don’t be pissed that i played a dr. frank song instead of an mtx song!

but jeff ott still rules.

deaf dj

maybe you all know how much i love dance music, or maybe you don’t. frankie wilde is the new best thing on the dance circuit. i wish i could have seen him in ibiza. you know anybody associated with ladderhaus can’t be bad either.

the best thing though, is the coke badger.

cock fighting or beating your boyfriend with a crowbar?

do you watch countdown with keith oberman? i have to since joe de-programmed fox news from our tv. (did you know you can do that?) this weekend, there was a spot* about the south carolina legislature passing a bill to make both cock fighting and criminal domestic violence a felony. only the cock fighting bill passed. the man interviewed to defend his position, why cdv should not be a felony, is precious. seriously precrious.

*scroll down to “video latest from countdown”, on the right hand side. it’s the first spot.

postal hijinks!

this guy kyle is awesome, in that he mails cameras in foam postcards, and then posts all the random pictures on the internet. it’s simple and brilliant really. this site posted all the pictures from a recent camera sent from baltimore to portland. it just shows how cool postal workers can be. infact, if i don’t score this library job, maybe i’ll look into the usps.

chomsky seeks greer

i know you all have probably alread seen the london review of books personals from various other sites. boing boing usw.

reading these ads makes me realise thankful that i have no chance of ever being in a relationship with people who write them.

here’s a good one:

Lazy, horny, Luddite flâneur, male, 52, seeks buxom, cheerful, affectionate female with low expectations, who wants to have lots of sex. This idler has a few cultural interests for the moments in between – poetry, art, film and opera amongst them. Down-to-earth, amiable – him, and you. No texts or emails please. Just letters, telephone, human contact. I did say I was a Luddite. Box no. 08/02

but i actually think i’d date this guy;

LRB? Never read it… hoping for a better class of tottie. F, 35. Eric Morecambe, dogs, spring, crispy duck, good dialogue (written and oral), tea, slapstick, Thatcher’s death, vodka, cheek muscles.

maybe i’ll email him if joe goes bad, though i doubt that’ll ever happen.

as an homage to the election in the uk, i’m posting this picture of my cat, lynton. he lives at my parents’, and i miss the fellow. he’s great at killing and eating rodents, shedding, and making my eyes water. the point of this post is to tell you all that mike gave me a flickr account. so… check it out. it’s not super interesting yet, as most of it is family pictures.

pontifical email

do you feel the need to e-mail the pope? think it might get you the fast track to god? today’s sfgate reports that benedict XVI has an email address, or two.
benedictxvi@vatican.va is his english adress, and benedetoxvi@vatican.va is his italian one. would it be the same as the latin one?

downfall

yesterday was hitler’s birthday. he would have been quite old. of course he died almost 60 years ago, but we all knew that. last night i went to see der untergang, or downfall as they call it here. it’s 2.5 hours of deliberate examination of the final days in the bunker in berlin. i had talked to people who saw the film, and their reviews weren’t very exciting. most of their criticism is valid and repeated by critics all over- it was slow, there wasn’t much character development, it tried to make sympathetic characters out of nazis, it tried to humanize hitler. (see lots of reviews hier.) if you’re expecting shocking revelations, you’ll be dissapointed. if you aren’t comfortable with the idea that all nazis were in fact human, and not alien monsters, then you will be dissapointed.

there are a number of different films emodied in der untergang. the most obcious is the human side of hitler realising that it’s all about to end. there’s also the depiction of those entrenched in nazi ideology coming to these conclusions as well, and their different ways of dealing with the situation. suicide shown by the film in a very gorey and graphic- there’s no way to romanticise it.

is this the best film about WWII ever made? i don’t know. it certainly is has some of the least dramatic fighting i’ve seen. this isn’t a spielberg feel good epic. there are no good guys. even the people you might think could be good have horribly tainted and problematic pasts. this review by the guardian examines these problems. but really, any intelligent person should already know this- not all nazis were monsters, but none of them were saints either. this is especially true for those who were actively involved with nazi organisations.

really though, this movie isn’t really for americans, or britons, or any of the “victors” of WWII. this is a german film for germans who still need to figure out what to do with their past. it’s said all the time, that today’s germans are not the same people that committed the worst crimes in the history of humanity, but these are their relatives. this third generation needs to figure out what’s going on before it gets worse. in this interview, director oliver hirschbiegel adresses the release of the film so close to the recent npd “victories” in sachsen and brandenburg;

“Looking at it from outside it’s probably much scarier than if you look at it from inside,” he suggests, lighting the first of several cigarettes, “because these people [neo-Nazis] are just dumb. They are farm boys who are like half-wits. And most of the people who voted for them didn’t do it because they’re Nazis or nationalists; they did it out of protest.” I cannot help thinking this all sounds rather familiar. “If there is a dangerous phenomenon,” he continues, “you find that in Austria, because there is a nationalist party there with an intelligent, charismatic leader, [Jorg] Heider. I think he is a dangerous man. But this in Germany, I do not take it seriously.”

he then went on to say on the humanising of hitler:

“That means something like the vagina that created this is still fertile. If we realise that these are human beings, we have to come to the painful realisation that evil must be in all of us and that if we look at history, evil seems to be the most powerful force on this planet. It’s our obligation to hold it at bay and to try to fight it off with peaceful means, using the energy of love. We have got both sides in us and anyone who has been around in life knows that that’s true. Every one of us has evil inside.

“Coming to terms with the past … I don’t know what that should be. To me it sounds a bit like finding peace. But there is no such thing. Again, this is the worst crime ever, by far, in the history of the world. There is no coming to terms. Of course the Germans now are not guilty. How could they be guilty? Most of them were born after the war.

“But they were our people, our ancestors, who did this. So we have the responsibility whether we want it or not. We have the responsibility.”

are you a racist?

ever worried that you’re a racist at heart? now you can take a test to reveal your inner racist.

i took the age discrimination test and it was “inconclusive“.
the results were also inconclusive for the gender test.
and they were inconclusive for the race test.

what does this mean? i have no idea. take the test yourself. it’s pretty bad.

papal misgivings

i think i’m going to resign myself to the fact that i can’t do anything but obsess about the pope, and i doubt it’s worth it. here’s a collection of reaction about the election of benedict XVI from salon. of course these are all americans/progressives bemoaning the new pope, so it’s not suprising nor worth much. preaching to the choir.

at least stortroopers are back.
